Inteliair Installation: Production welding facility within the Rolls Royce facility in Derby, U.K. The welding department in this facility is served by a 18.5kW extraction fan connected to a dust filtration unit which in turn connects to 27 welding extraction arms. It was rare for more than five operators to be welding at any given time and complaints were being received due to the noise being generated by the main extraction fan that was operating at 100% speed whenever any extraction was required. Instead of moving the extraction equipment outside where it would potentially have caused complaints from surrounding residential areas Rolls Royce asked us to install the Inteliair system to regulate fan speed in accordance with actual demand. We installed 27 automatic control dampers each of which are linked to a manual rocker style switch; when the welding operator requires extraction he simply turn the switch at his position to ‘on’ which in turn causes the control damper to open, the filter unit cleaning system to turn on (if previously off) and the main extract fan to either start or regulate its speed in accordance with demand. Since the installation of this system the time weighted average noise output from the extract fan within this area has reduced from 81dB(A) to 57dB(A).
